SB 29 Student Privacy

Senate Bill 29 (SB 29)

Ohio Senate Bill 29 (SB 29), which took effect in October 2024, is a law that protects student data privacy in Ohio’s K–12 schools. It requires that any student information handled by outside companies remains the property of the school district. These companies cannot sell or misuse student data, and they must report any data breaches right away. They are also required to delete or return student data within 90 days after a contract ends.

Schools must also provide parents with an annual notice that explains their monitoring policies and lists any companies that handle student data. SB 29 gives parents more transparency and helps keep student information safe.
