Just what is "augmented reality?" Breaking it down, augment means to supplement, expand, or enhance. Reality means, well, real life -- the here and now. Augmented reality is taking real life objects and supplementing or enhancing them digitally. With computer input (like a camera, graphics, GPS data and such), augmented reality can bring to life things that are not really there. At the bottom of this page is a video that may demonstrate some variations of augmented reality and its implications for education.
K-4 Augmented Reality Apps
Color one of the ColAR Mix pictures with crayons or colored pencils, then display is using the ColAR Mix iPad or iPhone app. Watch your artwork come to life as it pops off the page in augmented reality!
"Ruff Ruffman has to collect the lunch order for his studio crew. The challenge is keeping track of how many pieces of sushi everyone wants using augmented reality “markers” (printable hand-outs) that prompt activity within the app. The app uses 3-D imagery to reinforce the early algebraic concepts, helping kids to make the connection between real objects and corresponding numeric symbols."
"ZooBurst is a digital storytelling tool that lets anyone easily create his or her own 3D pop-up books. Using ZooBurst, storytellers of any age can create their own rich worlds in which their stories can come to life."
"Tricksters have escaped from Our Discovery Island and are stealing letter-sounds from the English Bank of Phonemes! Only you can catch them, using a fun, innovative and immersive Augmented Reality chase game - and by testing your knowledge of phonics."
Big Bird's Words
"Big Bird's Words uses word recognition to help children hunt out particular words in the real world and match them to icons. The game starts by asking the child to pick a word with an associated image, they then have to find that word in the real world by pointing the device's camera at the text."
"All you have to do is download the free flashcards, print them in color and then use the free app. When you open the app press “get started” and it opens a camera viewer. Place one or more of the cards in view of the camera and watch the magic happen. When you touch the screen on top of the animal or card it also tells you the letter name and animal." AR Dino Park
"Bring back ancient dinosaurs to life in front of eyes! By making use of AR( Augmented Reality ) let the ancient dinosaurs appear in various scenes taken by camera as if they are alive. You can proudly put such scenes in uploaded blogs, facebook and twitters."
